Abuja, Nigeria – The International Law Association (ILA), Nigerian Branch, has conferred its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on two distinguished figures in international law and diplomacy, Dr Fatou Bensouda, former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and current High Commissioner of The Gambia to the United Kingdom, and Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The awards were presented during the President’s Dinner and Award Night, part of the 9th Annual Law Conference of the ILA held in Abuja, attended by over 200 participants in person and online.
Dr Bensouda, celebrated as the first woman, first African, and first Muslim to serve as ICC Prosecutor, reflected on her remarkable journey in public service.
She shared how her passion for justice began in childhood, observing court proceedings in The Gambia and recognising the need for greater justice for victims, especially women.
She urged young lawyers to embrace integrity, hard work, and ethics while calling for inclusivity and support for women in leadership.
Prof. Sulaiman was honoured in the Academic Category for his outstanding contributions to international relations, diplomacy, and legislative development.
As former Minister for National Planning, he spearheaded Nigeria’s National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP) and crafted a comprehensive Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) policy.
Since becoming NILDS DG in 2019, he has transformed the institute into a leading hub for legislative and democratic governance, training thousands of parliamentarians and establishing postgraduate programs in legislative studies and party politics.
Presenting the awards, ILA Nigeria President, Prof. Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, emphasised that the Lifetime Achievement Award represents the highest honour of the Association, recognising Africa’s finest in foreign policy and diplomacy.
