2027: Itsekiri Coalition Seeks Alliance With Urhobo, Ijaw to Strengthen Political Relevance

As political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Itsekiri Grassroot Coalition has called for a unified political front among Itsekiri communities across Delta and Edo states, warning that disunity could further weaken their electoral relevance.

Speaking during a media briefing, Prince Collins Oedema, the National Coordinator of the group, stated that the Itsekiri ethnic nationality must urgently consolidate its political strength to address the long-standing structural challenges that have hindered its influence since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

According to Edema, issues such as ward delineation, minority status in several local government areas, and recurring electoral disputes in the Warri axis have consistently undermined the political standing of the Itsekiri people.

He noted that despite their presence across multiple regions, including Delta Central, Delta South, and parts of Edo State, the lack of coordination among Itsekiri communities has limited their ability to negotiate political power effectively.

“The reality is that our people are spread across several local governments where we exist as minorities.

Without a united front, our voices will continue to be marginalised,” Edema said.

He explained that the coalition was established to harmonise the interests of Itsekiri communities and provide a common platform for political engagement, representation, and strategic negotiations ahead of future elections.

In a move aimed at fostering regional stability, the group also extended a call for collaboration with neighbouring ethnic nationalities, particularly the Urhobo and Ijaw.

Edema emphasised that shared interests among the groups outweigh historical differences, urging a shift from rivalry to cooperation.

“We have more in common with the Urhobo and Ijaw than what divides us. This is the time to embrace fairness, mutual respect, and genuine partnership for the collective development of our region,” he stated.

The coalition further reaffirmed its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, it disclosed that consultations are ongoing regarding candidates for key legislative positions, stressing that only individuals committed to unity and the broader interests of the Itsekiri people would receive its backing.

The group maintained that its strategy going forward would focus on political cohesion, inter-ethnic collaboration, and sustained advocacy for equitable representation within the Nigerian political landscape.
