ABUJA — The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) says it has established a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct regarding the death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of world-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Following its 25th session held in Abuja on February 17–18, 2026, the Investigative Panel issued interim suspension orders against three medical practitioners pending the final outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
The investigation was triggered by a formal complaint lodged on January 16, 2026. After reviewing affidavits and oral testimony from staff at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, the Panel determined that there is sufficient evidence to move forward with negligence charges against Dr Tosin Majekodunmi (Medical Director, Euracare), Dr Titus Ogundare (Anaesthesiologist, Euracare), and Dr Atinuke Uwajeh (Chief Medical Director, Atlantis Paediatric Hospital).
Additionally, ten other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital have been cited for professional misconduct.
Their cases have been referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal for formal adjudication.
The MDCN clarified that these findings are preliminary and do not yet constitute a final determination of guilt.
“The affected practitioners are entitled to a full hearing before the Disciplinary Tribunal, where evidence will be examined, and a final decision rendered,” the Council stated.
The Council pledged full transparency as the proceedings transitioned to the Tribunal phase.
