TEHRAN — Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed a man convicted of espionage for Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, Mossad, marking a grim escalation in the shadow war between the two nations.
The execution comes as the broader Middle East remains gripped by a cycle of deadly missile exchanges and airstrikes that have pushed regional stability to the brink.
According to the state-aligned Tasnim News Agency, the individual was apprehended in a rural district west of Tehran.
The arrest reportedly occurred during the 12-day military confrontation between Iran and Israel this past June.
Authorities alleged the man played a pivotal role in Israeli intelligence operations by providing high-resolution imagery of restricted zones, coordinates and sensitive data regarding strategic military and infrastructure locations.
The execution is not an isolated event. Since the June conflict, Iranian security forces have ramped up domestic surveillance, detaining dozens of individuals on suspicion of collaborating with foreign entities.
While official figures are rarely publicised, unconfirmed reports suggest that more than 10 people have been executed on similar espionage charges in recent months.
The surge in capital punishment has drawn sharp rebukes from the international community.
Human rights organisations argue that Tehran’s legal system often uses espionage as a broad label to target political dissidents and silence internal opposition.
“The use of the death penalty in Iran is frequently a tool of political repression rather than a measure of criminal justice,” a spokesperson for a leading human rights monitor stated.
Data from the United Nations underscores the scale of the crisis, noting that Iran carried out more than 1,000 executions last year, one of the highest rates globally.
