First African Church Mission Primate Charged with Assault, Grievous Harm

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Very Reverend Sunday Oludare Matilukuro, Primate of the First African Church Mission (FACM), has been formally charged before an Igbosere High Court, presided over by Justice Serifat Sonaike, over allegations of conspiracy, assault, and wounding.



The charges were brought by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) through the office of the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Zone 2, Onikan, following an investigation into a violent altercation involving a church official.


In the charge sheet marked LD/27724c/2026, filed by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Omonyimenle Eliot Ijie, the Primate is accused of leading an attack on Mr Sunday Soneye, an official of the mission.


The prosecution alleged that on or about August 14, 2025, the Primate and others (currently at large) conspired to assault Mr Soneye. 


The particulars of the offence stated that the victim was beaten “to stupor,” causing him to lose consciousness and suffer grievous bodily harm.



The legal action against the Reverend Matilukuro includes: 


Count 1: Conspiracy – Alleging a joint agreement to commit a felony, contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.


Count 2: Assault Occasioning Harm – Alleging the victim was unlawfully assaulted until he fainted, violating Section 173.


Count 3: Grievous Harm – Alleging the infliction of severe physical injury, contrary to Section 245.


Count 4: Wounding – Alleging the intentional wounding of the official, contrary to Section 246(a).
