Court Sends Notorious Fraudster Nwude, Lawyers to Jail for Forgery

Lagos, NigeriaJustice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced notorious fraudster Emmanuel Nwude and his two lawyers, Emmanuel Ilechukwu and Rowland Kalu, to one year imprisonment each for forgery and dealing in forfeited property.

The trio faced a 15-count charge filed in 2018, including conspiracy, forgery, uttering false documents, perverting the course of justice, and fabricating evidence.

The charges stemmed from their attempt to reclaim and dispose of a property, Plot Y, Mobolaji Johnson Street, Oregun, Ikeja, which had been forfeited to victims of Nwude’s earlier fraud conviction in 2005.

Despite pleading not guilty, the prosecution, led by Nnaemeka Omewa, presented five witnesses and documentary evidence.

After years of legal manoeuvres, including failed appeals and petitions, Justice Dada found the defendants guilty on 13 counts, acquitting them only on charges of making false statements to a public officer.

Nwude, infamous for defrauding Brazil’s Banco Noroeste of $242 million in the early 2000s, had previously served a five-year sentence and forfeited multiple properties under a plea bargain.

However, after his release, he conspired with his lawyers to reclaim the forfeited Oregun property through forged documents and fraudulent court orders.

Delivering judgment, Justice Dada stressed that the defendants’ actions undermined the restitution process and attempted to dispossess rightful owners of the property. Each was sentenced to one year's imprisonment.
