A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos has convicted and sentenced a 46-year-old man, Taofeek Muraina, to three years' imprisonment for unlawfully trafficking 141 kilograms of cannabis sativa.
The trial judge, Justice Deinde Dipeolu, handed down the sentence after Muraina pleaded guilty to a one-count charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The court, however, gave the convict the option of a fine, ordering him to pay N3 million instead of serving a custodial sentence.
According to NDLEA counsel, Juliana O. Negedu, Muraina was arrested on November 13, 2025, at Otto Park, Oyingbo, in Lagos Mainland, with the prohibited substance allegedly concealed in a Toyota Venza bearing registration number MUS 113 YK.
The prosecutor also told the court that the vehicle, with chassis number WV2ZZZTOZPHO19291, was used to transport the narcotic substance.
Negedu said the offence contravened Section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which criminalises trafficking in prohibited narcotic substances.
Muraina admitted to the charge when it was read in court and entered a guilty plea.
Following the plea, the prosecution reviewed the facts of the case, tendered exhibits, including the seized substance and the defendant’s confessional statements. It urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Counsel for the defendant, Bolanle Kolawole, pleaded for leniency, telling the court that Muraina was a first-time offender with no previous criminal record, a position the prosecution did not challenge.
After considering the submissions of both parties and the defendant’s guilty plea, Justice Dipeolu convicted Muraina and sentenced him to three years' imprisonment, with an option of a N3 million fine.
The charge stated that Muraina, on or about November 13, 2025, at Otto Park, Oyingbo, Lagos, trafficked 141 kilograms of cannabis sativa using the Toyota Venza, an offence punishable under the NDLEA Act.
