Dangote Cement Launches ‘Safety FairPlay’ Initiative to Transform Workplace Culture

IBESE, OGUN STATE – In a strategic move to transition from mere compliance to a deeply rooted safety mindset, Dangote Cement Plc has launched its Safety FairPlay Initiative at the Ibese Plant in Ogun State.

The program, which serves as a pilot for a group-wide rollout, marks a milestone in the company’s mission to foster an equitable, transparent, and proactive safety environment.

Unlike traditional safety protocols, Safety FairPlay focuses on the human element—driving behavioural change through a balanced framework of Recognition, Coaching, and Discipline.

Speaking at the launch event, Mr Anandam Duraisamy, Technical Director of Dangote Cement Plc (DCP), described the initiative as a defining moment for the organisation.

“Safety FairPlay is about building trust and accountability. When employees know that safe behaviour is recognised and risky actions are addressed fairly, safety ceases to be a policy and becomes a shared responsibility.

“True excellence begins with our attitudes and our willingness to look out for one another,” Duraisamy stated.

The initiative, which is built on rewarding and celebrating positive safety conduct, providing guidance and training to address at-risk actions, and maintaining a transparent framework for accountability, has seen high-level engagement from both management and staff, signalling a unified commitment to the new standards.

Mr Elvis Akalusi, Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at the Ibese Plant, emphasised that the initiative would be fully integrated into daily workflows through collaboration with all department heads.

“This is about the courage to do the right thing even when no one is watching. We are building a culture where speaking up is encouraged and mistakes are viewed as opportunities for continuous learning rather than reasons for fear,” Akalusi noted.
