Zambia, Dangote Group Partner for Sustainable Manufacturing, Energy, Agriculture Growth

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, along with his executive team, recently paid a courtesy visit to Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia

The visit underscores the Dangote Group’s continued dedication to supporting Zambia’s ambitious national development agenda.

Since launching operations in Zambia, the Dangote Group has shown steadfast confidence in the country’s economic potential.

Dangote Cement Zambia Limited (DCZL) stands as the single largest investment in Zambia’s manufacturing sector, with an investment exceeding USD 500 million.

Established in 2015, the Ndola-based integrated cement plant has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes.

The facility also includes a 30 MW captive power plant and a fleet of over 400 trucks, ensuring efficient nationwide distribution.

The entry of Dangote Cement revolutionised Zambia’s cement industry, transforming the nation from a net importer into a significant exporter within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

To date, DCZL has sold over 8 million tonnes of cement and continues to lead the market in terms of quality and reliability.

In 2025, its flagship product, Dangote 3X, earned the Runner-up Product of the Year award from the Zambian Association of Manufacturers (ZAM).

The company has also received the Exporter of the Year award consecutively from 2021 to 2023 and maintained runner-up status in 2024 and 2025.

DCZL directly employs over 1,200 Zambians and supports more than 5,000 indirect jobs across logistics, engineering, and local supply chain sectors. Importantly, all raw materials used in production are sourced locally, which sustains value creation within Zambia and nurtures economic development.

Environmental sustainability is a key focus for Dangote Cement Zambia. The company has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint by substituting over 30% of fossil fuels with alternatives, including such materials as used tyres, municipal waste, plastic, sawdust, and corn cobs. Certified by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), DCZL safely manages hazardous waste and has earned multiple Environmental and Sustainability Awards for its leadership in green manufacturing.

During the meeting, President Hichilema commended Dangote Group for its vital role in Zambia’s development and encouraged stronger collaboration between the company, government, and private sector to tackle ongoing energy challenges.

Aliko Dangote reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to align with government initiatives focused on climate change mitigation, as well as bolstering the energy and agriculture sectors.

He highlighted Zambia’s enormous agricultural potential and promoted diversification towards climate-smart, irrigation-based farming to strengthen food security and economic resilience.

Furthermore, Dangote expressed intentions to explore investments in solar and thermal energy projects

Leveraging the Ndola facility’s infrastructure, he aims to alleviate power shortages in both Zambia and the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Delving into Zambia’s mineral wealth, including coal, the Group is investigating sustainable power-generation solutions to complement regional energy needs.

The existing 30 MW captive power plant at the Ndola plant has enabled Dangote Cement Zambia to achieve energy self-sufficiency and contribute an 8 MW surplus to the national grid via the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), enhancing Zambia’s power stability.

President Hichilema welcomed Dangote’s proactive approach and stressed Zambia’s readiness to deepen partnerships that unlock industrial growth opportunities aligned with the country’s 8th National Development Plan (2022–2026). Focus areas for collaboration include manufacturing, energy, and agriculture.

With its substantial investments, innovative sustainability practices, and forward-looking strategies, the Dangote Group continues to solidify its role as a trusted strategic partner in Zambia’s ongoing industrialisation and economic transformation journey.
