Nigeria Is Sovereign, Not a US Colony: APC Leader Slams Trump Over War Threat

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Kehinde Alex Bankole (KAB), has called on President Bola Tinubu to remain steadfast in his governance agenda and avoid distractions following the unprecedented threat of military action against Nigeria issued by United States President, Donald Trump.

Trump, in a controversial social media post on Saturday, claimed he had directed the US Defence Department to prepare for possible military intervention in Nigeria.

The declaration escalated his ongoing accusations that the Nigerian government has failed to prevent what he described as widespread violence against Christians, an allegation Nigeria has consistently denied.

Trump’s post accused the Nigerian authorities of mass slaughter of Christians, warning that the United States would immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria if decisive action was not taken.

Reacting from Europe, Bankole, a pioneer member of the Kwara State House of Assembly Commission and a respected APC leader from Oke Ero Local Government Area, dismissed Trump’s remarks as a gross violation of international norms and Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He anchored his response on the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2, which enshrines the principles of national sovereignty and the legal equality of all member states.

According to him, “Article 2(1) affirms that all UN Member States are equal and have the right to determine their political, social, and economic paths without interference.

“Article 2(4) prohibits the use or threat of force against any nation’s territorial integrity or political independence. And Article 2(7) forbids intervention in domestic affairs.”

Bankole, however, acknowledged a narrow exception under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which allows the UN Security Council to authorise enforcement measures in situations constituting a threat to peace or acts of aggression.

“These provisions collectively balance a state’s sovereign rights with its responsibilities as a UN member,” he said, adding that Nigeria is currently at a defining moment in its history.

The APC stalwart described Trump’s statement as reckless and shameful, saying it was an affront to the dignity of the most populous black nation in the world.

“It’s disgraceful that the sovereignty of a country hosting the largest black population on earth is being ridiculed by one crazy individual in the United States,” he fumed.

Bankole further attributed Nigeria’s vulnerability to such threats to the cumulative failures of past administrations.

“It’s unfortunate that this can happen because our leaders over the years have refused to build functional institutions. Instead, they have been building mansions at home and abroad for selfish purposes,” he lamented.

He decried the state of Nigeria’s infrastructure, pointing to poor electricity supply, dilapidated roads, and the insecurity that has forced farmers from their lands due to banditry.

Despite these challenges, Bankole absolved President Tinubu of blame, insisting that the administration has shown commitment and direction in addressing national problems.

“President Tinubu has done beautifully well in the last two years. He cannot be blamed for the rot that accumulated over decades,” he stated.

Bankole praised the President’s recent overhaul of the military leadership, describing it as a step toward revitalising the nation’s security architecture.

Calling for unity and collective responsibility, the APC chieftain urged citizens to rise above partisanship and defend the nation’s sovereignty.

“We must support our country. This is not the time to retreat into comfort zones or play politics with our future.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and together, we must ensure it stands tall in the face of external provocation,” he said.
