The internal crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) reached a definitive climax on Thursday, October 23, with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) announcing the formal expulsion of the suspended National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, and nine other high-profile members.
The NWC’s decision, which ratifies months of internal upheaval, followed the consideration and adoption of a report submitted by a disciplinary committee tasked with investigating allegations of financial misconduct and gross disloyalty against the affected members.
Alhaji Gabam was expelled, along with the suspended National Youth Leader, Uchechukwu Chukwuma, and eight other members.
This action effectively terminates their membership and permanently relieves them of their former offices within the party structure.
The party had first suspended Gabam and Chukwuma in July 2025, alongside the National Auditor, Nze Nnadi Clarkson, over initial allegations of financial misappropriation.
According to the statement released by the NWC, Mr Nnadi Clarkson, the suspended National Auditor, was, however, not expelled.
His case concluded with the acceptance of his voluntary resignation, which was communicated to the NWC through the Acting National Chairman, Dr Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe.
The NWC, therefore, formally relieved him of his position based on his letter.
Crucially, the expulsion list extends beyond the suspended officers to include seven other members, Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu, who were found guilty of disloyalty and nonconformity.
The NWC detailed an incident of alleged forced entry into the party’s National Secretariat at 17 Nairobi Street, Wuse II, Abuja, by these members.
The statement claimed that this group gained unlawful entry by force into the National Secretariat in the unholy hours of Monday, 28 July 2025, where they were apprehended by law enforcement agencies.
“These daring intruders were arrested and detained along with burgled items found in their possession, including sensitive official documents and valuables carted from the SDP Secretariat, and are currently answering to their crimes in a court of law on arraignment against them by the Nigerian Police,” the NWC statement read.
The resolutions, taken at the NWC meeting held at the SDP National Secretariat in Abuja, formally confirmed the removal and expulsion of Gabam and Chukwuma from their offices and the party's membership, respectively.
The eight members involved in the alleged secretariat break-in were also expelled from the SDP.
The expulsion was jointly endorsed by key members of the NWC. Those who signed and endorsed the resolution included the Acting National Chairman, Dr Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe; Deputy National Chairman (South), Senator Ugochukwu Uba; National Secretary, Dr Olu Agunloye; National Legal Adviser, Aderemi Abimbola, and seven other national officers.
The NWC concluded by stating that other recommendations from the White Paper, which focus on administrative safeguards, measures and procedures, would be implemented to guide the party forward.
