A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a 45-year-old Malaysian-Chinese man, Liang Tak You, to two years imprisonment, with an option of a N1 million fine, for the unlawful importation of 26.10 kilograms of a psychoactive drug substance known as Loud.
Justice Ibrahim Ahmad Kala delivered the judgment after Mr You, who was born Malaysian but acquired Chinese nationality, was arraigned by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to the prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, the convict was apprehended with the prohibited substance concealed within two suitcases upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, on July 25, 2025.
The drugs were identified as Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine and heroin.
The charge stated that Mr You was arrested during the inward clearance of passengers aboard an Emirates Airlines flight travelling from Bangkok, Thailand, via Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to Lagos.
The offence, the court heard, contravenes Section 11 (a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which is punishable under the same Act.
Upon the charge being read, the defendant pleaded guilty, admitting to committing the offence.
Following his guilty plea, the prosecutor, who also heads the legal department of the NDLEA’s MMIA command, urged the court to convict and sentence him based on his plea and the evidence presented.
The prosecution tendered several exhibits, including Mr You’s confessional statements (in both Chinese and English), the bulk of the drugs, his international passport, and a sum of $153 USD.
However, the defendant’s lawyer, Chief Lilian Omotunde, pleaded for leniency, describing her client, a driver by profession, as vulnerable and gullible.
She requested that the court consider a fine option instead of a custodial sentence.
While sentencing the defendant to two years' imprisonment, Justice Kala granted the request for clemency, ordering him to pay an alternative fine of N1 million.
Furthermore, the judge ordered the forfeiture of the bulk of the seized drug, the sum of $153 USD, and his travelling documents, excluding his international passport, to the Federal Government of Nigeria for destruction, provided no appeal is lodged against the judgment.
