The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has issued a statement expressing profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his timely and decisive intervention that successfully averted a nationwide industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), which the company described as disruptive actions against its operations.
In a statement released over the weekend, the company commended the President’s leadership, noting that the coordinated efforts of his ministers and senior government officials were instrumental in the restoration of order and stability to the energy sector at a critical moment.
“Dangote Refinery is grateful to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE Bola Tinubu, GCFR for his intervention, through his Ministers and senior officials, which resulted in the abatement of the disruptive actions of PENGASSAN against the Refinery,” the statement affirmed.
The oil refinery, touted as Africa’s largest single-train facility, was facing a major threat to its operations following a dispute with PENGASSAN, which had called for a nationwide strike.
The union’s action included directives to its members at various oil and gas facilities to halt crude oil and gas supply to the refinery, a move the company has consistently described as illegal, lawless, and an act of economic sabotage.
The dispute stemmed from the company's decision to terminate the appointments of over 800 staff who had recently joined the union, with Dangote claiming the action was a necessary reorganisation to protect the facility from repeated acts of sabotage.
Following government mediation, the strike was eventually suspended, and an agreement was reached for the affected workers to be redeployed to other entities within the Dangote Group without loss of pay.
The Dangote Refinery was explicit in acknowledging the pivotal roles played by specific members of President Tinubu’s administration and the nation's security apparatus in de-escalating the crisis.
The company lauded Nigeria’s Security Chiefs who worked “tirelessly” to restore normalcy. This group was led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Adeola Toyin Ajayi, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr Mohammed Mohammed.
Furthermore, the refinery singled out several senior government officials for their untiring and determined work, often late into the wee hours of several nights, to prevent what it termed a declared disruption of Nigeria’s energy sector by anarchists and agents of darkness.
Those commended included the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Mohammed Dingyadi; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
“We remain very grateful to these officials for their patriotism and national service,” the statement added.
Beyond the government, the Dangote Refinery extended heartfelt gratitude to the Nigerian populace for their overwhelming public support during the period of industrial tension.
“To Nigerians of all walks of life, we owe you more than a debt of gratitude. Your support for our righteous cause was both humbling and overwhelming.
“We heard your supportive voices and words of encouragement literally in all the street corners and media channels of Nigeria and were energised and strengthened thereby," the company stated, positioning the conflict as one between the refinery’s commitment to national progress and the interests of “rent seekers, economic saboteurs and economic squatters.”
The Refinery also reserved special praise for its personnel, whose loyalty ensured the continuity of operations.
“To our loyal workers, who ensured that our operations were not disrupted even for a second, we thank and appreciate you.
“The strength of Dangote Group lies in our people and their unalloyed dedication and allegiance to our cause, mission and vision,” the statement read, promising that the loyal workforce would continue to be handsomely rewarded and remunerated notwithstanding the hypocritical directives and pronouncements of the enemies of Nigeria’s progress.
The statement also made a point to commend the Nigerian judiciary, which had previously issued an interim court order restraining PENGASSAN from continuing its industrial action and cutting off gas and crude oil supplies to the facility.
“One institution that we revere and must loudly acknowledge is the Nigerian judiciary.
“They stood up for the truth and proved themselves as the bastion of hope for all of us,” the company noted, while simultaneously accusing the opposing party of rascality and lawlessness for allegedly refusing to accept the court orders.
Reaffirming its credentials, the refinery insisted that the Dangote Group is a model private sector player and the largest private sector employer in the country, with a compensation framework benchmarked against international standards to protect employee welfare.
Concluding its statement, the Dangote Refinery reiterated its unwavering dedication to national service and industrial growth, promising to continue serving the nation faithfully and diligently through the uninterrupted production of its petroleum products.
"Our commitment to the Nigerian nation and our pact with its people remain undiluted, undiminished and unalterable notwithstanding the distractions from our detractors and the saboteurs in our midst,” the company concluded.
