Allegations of Importing Polluted Petrol False and Misleading — Dangote Refinery

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed recent media reports alleging that it imported finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company clarified that the cargo in question was an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, explaining that it is a standard part of the global refining process.

“As a world-scale complex refinery, we process a wide range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks to optimise production and product quality.

“The cargo will be fully refined in our processing units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards,” the statement read.

Operating within a Free Trade Zone, the refinery said it produces and sells only high-quality fuels that comply with all regulatory specifications.

It also noted that its exports to the United States and Europe, two of the most tightly regulated energy markets, underscore its adherence to international quality and safety benchmarks.

Dangote Refinery further disclosed that all imported feedstocks are accompanied by quality certificates, which are transparently shared with regulators.

“We are also willing to make these documents public in the interest of full transparency,” the company added, reaffirming its commitment to cleaner fuels and Nigeria’s energy independence.
