The Chinwe Bode-Akinwande (CBA) Foundation, a prominent non-governmental organisation dedicated to supporting widows and their children, marked its 10th anniversary with a high-impact conference aimed at advancing empowerment and social inclusion for widows across Nigeria.
Themed ‘Empowering Widows in Nigeria: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Vulnerability,’ the event held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, brought together policymakers, corporate leaders, and development advocates to chart sustainable solutions for welfare.
Delivering the keynote address, Mrs Amina Oyagbola, Founder and Chairperson of Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR), described widow empowerment as both a moral obligation and a national priority.
She lauded the Foundation’s founder, Mrs Chinwe Bode-Akinwande, for transforming compassion into a social movement that restores dignity and hope.
“Through the CBA Foundation, you have given courage, confidence, and dignity to countless widows and children.
“Your work proves that one person’s vision can transform generations,” Oyagbola said.
In a goodwill message, Acharu Osime, Head of Internal Communications at FirstBank, reiterated the Bank’s commitment to supporting platforms that drive inclusion and welfare.
“At FirstBank, our sustainability pillars focus on welfare, diversity, and financial inclusion.
“We are proud to support initiatives like this that empower women and build stronger communities,” she said.
Damilola Popoola, Head of Strategy at digitXplus, commended the Foundation’s decade-long impact, describing the event as a celebration of resilience and dignity.
“Empowerment begins with dignity, and dignity grows when women are given a voice, a skill, and a chance to dream again,” she noted.
Expressing gratitude to partners and attendees, Mrs Bode-Akinwande reaffirmed the Foundation’s vision of a Nigeria where widowhood does not equate to poverty.
“When we lift a widow, we lift her children, her community, and our nation,” she said.
The conference featured a lively panel session moderated by communications strategist, Jide Benson, with panellists including Etemore Glover, Abiola Odanye, and Damilola Hassan, who discussed policy advocacy, empowerment models, and sustainable support systems for widows.
Corporate sponsors, including FirstBank, Vyrus, Eko Hotel, Truecaller, Power Oil, Munch It, Minimie, Kellogg’s, and Colgate, supported the event, underscoring the private sector’s role in driving inclusive social change.
