The issue of global security has become a political tinderbox. Across regions and nations, the presence, or absence, of security profoundly influences governance and politics.
In Nigeria, however, security matters are often highly politicised and weaponised to settle political scores.
When the focus shifts to Southeast Nigeria, the narrative frequently takes a distorted turn, with states subjected to comparative exaggerations.
Anambra, in particular, has often been unfairly demonised. Critics amplify isolated incidents to paint a picture of chaos and doom.
Yet, under the progressive leadership of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the hard facts tell a remarkably different story.
According to Governor Soludo’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, statistics recently released by The Cable for the period July 2024 to June 2025 provide compelling evidence of Anambra’s success in combating insecurity.
The report highlights the effectiveness of the governor’s innovative security framework anchored on the Udo Ga Chi Allied Forces, comprising the Army, Navy, Police, DSS, and Civil Defence, and supported by the Agunechemba Vigilante Network.
Aburime revealed that during the 12 months under review, Anambra recorded just 63 kidnapping cases, placing it 16th nationally and the safest in the entire Southeast region.
This data, he stressed, underscores Anambra’s remarkable progress in ensuring the safety of lives and property.
“This data confirms that Anambra has successfully positioned itself as the most secure state in the Southeast,” Aburime said.
“When viewed against the national backdrop, our security achievements stand out even more impressively,” it was added.
A Hybrid Security Model That Works
Governor Soludo’s security framework integrates the professional expertise of the Udo Ga Chi Allied Forces with the local intelligence of the Agunechemba Vigilante Network.
This multi-layered model combines grassroots intelligence with structured law enforcement, making it uniquely effective.
The vigilante groups, drawn from local communities, have an intimate understanding of their terrain, including criminal hideouts and suspicious activities often missed by external forces.
Their presence ensures rapid deployment and swift responses to threats across the state’s 21 local government areas.
This decentralised approach has also fostered trust and collaboration between citizens and security agencies.
By involving local stakeholders directly, it has created a sense of shared responsibility and strengthened community-police relations.
Tangible Results in Daily Life
While statistics capture the broader picture, real-life improvements in Anambra’s daily life are even more compelling:
Major markets in Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka now operate longer hours.
Nightlife has returned to several communities.
Traders feel safer transporting goods across the state.
Farmers can access their farmlands with greater confidence, boosting food security and rural development.
These changes, Aburime noted, demonstrate that security is not just about numbers but about enhancing citizens’ quality of life.
Countering the Critics
Critics often magnify isolated security incidents while ignoring the bigger picture. Aburime emphasised that no security system is flawless, and occasional incidents are inevitable in any dynamic society.
“What truly matters is the overall trend, the systematic response to threats, and how a state performs compared to others,” he explained.
He further noted that while other states with longer-established security frameworks continue to struggle with higher crime rates, Anambra has maintained relative peace, underscoring the effectiveness of Soludo’s approach.
Sustaining the Gains
The Soludo administration is not resting on its laurels. Plans are underway to:
Strengthen existing security structures
Deploy advanced technology solutions
Enhance inter-state collaboration to tackle cross-border crimes
Aburime affirmed that Governor Soludo remains committed to accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement to ensure these gains are not only sustained but expanded.
Conclusion
Aburime concluded by reiterating that the Cable report offers irrefutable evidence that Governor Soludo’s security strategy is working.
“With Anambra ranking as the safest state in the Southeast and among the lowest nationally for kidnapping incidents, the data speaks louder than the exaggerated claims of detractors,” he stated.
