In a testament to his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s economic development, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has affirmed his company's resolve to tackle unemployment head-on.
Speaking from the sprawling Dangote Refinery complex, he revealed that his businesses are not only creating jobs but also providing a quality of life and security that sets a new standard for the nation's workforce.
Dangote’s comments came as he addressed concerns about job displacement following the launch of the refinery’s new CNG truck fleet.
He dismissed these fears, stating, "We are not trying to take anybody out of the market, will our own tankers be driven by robots? We have not displaced any jobs; we are creating many more."
He pointed out the exceptional benefits package offered to employees, particularly the CNG truck drivers, who are earning salaries three times the national minimum wage.
These drivers also receive a comprehensive living wage, along with life and health insurance that covers themselves, their spouses, and up to four children.
Additionally, they are enrolled in a lifelong pension plan.
Going a step further, Dangote announced that after five years of service without a single accident, these drivers become eligible for a housing loan.
He also clarified that joining a trade union is a personal, optional choice for each driver, demonstrating the company’s respect for individual autonomy.
Beyond the drivers, the company is also creating numerous positions for mechanics, fleet managers, and other professionals essential to supporting the new fleet.
Dangote reflected on the enormous challenges of building the refinery, a project he described as a monumental risk.
He recalled facing repeated warnings from industry experts and investors who argued that only sovereign nations undertake ventures of such magnitude.
He admitted that a failure would have resulted in the loss of all his assets to lenders, yet his belief in Nigeria and Africa never wavered.
"The decision to build the refinery was not easy. But we believed in Nigeria and Africa," he said.
This bold bet, Dangote stated, has already yielded significant results for the country. The refinery has driven down the price of petrol from nearly N1,100 to N841 in several regions, including the Southwest, Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, and Kwara.
“With the gradual rollout of the CNG fleet, I anticipate these price reductions will soon be felt nationwide, easing the financial burden on millions of Nigerians.
He further revealed the refinery’s robust capacity, stating that between June and the first week of September 2025, the facility had already exported over 1.1 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
This, he said, demonstrates the refinery’s ability not only to meet Nigeria’s domestic demand but also to generate crucial foreign exchange through exports.
Reaffirming his commitment to Nigeria’s industrialisation, Dangote described it as the key to the continent’s development.
He called for the adoption of stronger policies to protect local industries and discourage the dumping of cheap foreign goods, citing the collapse of the textile sector as a cautionary tale.
He stressed that industrialisation is the only path to sustainable economic growth and a circular economy, asserting, “Relying on imports means exporting jobs and importing poverty.”
Dangote concluded by emphasising that the refinery is open to partnerships and collaborations with other stakeholders in the downstream sector, underscoring that collective effort and cooperation will ultimately strengthen the entire industry.
