NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) has underscored the critical role of maritime training and human capital development in helping Nigeria adapt to a rapidly changing global maritime regulatory environment.
Speaking at the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) Conference held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, the Managing Director of NSML, Mr Abdulkadir Ahmed, represented by Mr Mutiu Olayiwole, Manager, Finance & Corporate Services, presented a paper titled “The Evolving Global Maritime Regulatory Environment – The Role of Maritime Training and Capacity Development.”
Ahmed pointed out that the maritime industry, a major driver of global trade, is experiencing significant transformations driven by environmental regulations, technological advancements, and increasing cyber threats.
In particular, he cited the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) decarbonisation targets and growing cybersecurity concerns as key forces reshaping the sector.
He called for urgent and continuous updates to maritime training curricula, with a focus on environmental compliance, digital systems, cybersecurity awareness, and practical understanding of global maritime laws.
“Compliance, safety, and operational efficiency hinge on our ability to train and empower seafarers and maritime professionals to meet the moment,” Ahmed said.
Highlighting NSML’s contributions, he pointed to the Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny, Rivers State, Africa’s first maritime training facility accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK MCA).
The centre is also certified by DNV and approved by NIMASA to run STCW 2010-compliant programmes.
“NSML is proud to champion Nigeria’s maritime development, not just through vessels and infrastructure, but by investing in the people who power the industry,” he added.
Ahmed commended AMJON’s contributions to informed maritime reporting and reiterated NSML’s commitment to building a sustainable and future-ready maritime workforce for Nigeria and Africa.
A major highlight of the event was the Maritime Excellence Service Award presented to NSML by AMJON in recognition of the company’s innovative contributions to sustainable shipping and maritime training.
Through its Structured Cadetship Development Programme (SCDP), NSML has trained over 200 cadets, leading to an 85% Nigerianisation rate on its vessels and full Nigerian staffing in onshore operations.
It also runs one of Africa’s most advanced maritime simulation suites for real-time training in bridge, engine, and cargo operations, as well as emergency scenarios.
Beyond training, NSML is building a new 23,000m³ LPG carrier in South Korea and advancing its fleet renewal programme by replacing ageing steam vessels with modern dual-fuel LNG carriers such as AXIOS II and AKTORAS.
