In a landmark judgment, the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Alhaji Mohammed Gobir, a former director of Afromedia Plc and associate of ex-Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to seven years in prison for orchestrating an elaborate multi-currency fraud scheme.
Justice Raliat Adebiyi handed down the sentence after finding Gobir guilty on all 17 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges included stealing, obtaining by false pretence, forgery, and possessing fraudulent documents.
Gobir’s conviction stems from a 2016 petition filed by Afromedia Plc, detailing how he exploited his position on the board—gained by falsely pledging a ₦1 billion investment—to defraud the company of over ₦514.4 million, $3.5 million, $2.1 million, and £51,000.
The EFCC’s investigation revealed that Gobir deceived the company into believing he was securing high-level investment deals and attempting to retrieve $250 million allegedly held in a UK bank. He demanded $250,000 for a bogus “waiver certificate” from British anti-money laundering authorities—claims the court described as fictitious.
One charge detailed how Gobir manipulated the company into approving over ₦514 million for a non-existent $70 million transfer from his supposed London account.
He was first arrested in his Ikoyi mansion on September 12, 2015.
Delivering judgment, Justice Adebiyi condemned Gobir’s abuse of corporate trust and manipulation of financial structures for personal gain, sentencing him to seven years in prison.
The EFCC lauded the verdict as a strong message that no one is above the law, regardless of influence or status.
