ILA, Nigeria to Host 9th Annual Conference on Tax Evasion, Economic Crimes in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian branch of the International Law Association (ILA Nigeria) is set to convene leading legal experts, policymakers, and financial professionals in Abuja for its 9th annual conference, focusing on tackling tax evasion, illicit financial flows, and other economic crimes through international law.

The three-day conference, scheduled for April 13 to 15, 2026, will take place at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and will feature keynote addresses, masterclasses, panel discussions, and networking sessions.

Speaking at a pre-conference press briefing, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Grace Dafiel, said the event would explore the evolving role of international law in addressing complex financial crimes in a rapidly changing global landscape.

The conference, themed ‘Mitigating Economic and Financial Crime Risks in a Shifting Global Order: The Role of International Law,’ is expected to provide a platform for robust dialogue among international lawyers, diplomats, and stakeholders on strengthening regulatory enforcement and risk mitigation strategies.

Participants will include legal practitioners, business professionals, academics, students, and policymakers interested in advancing international legal frameworks to combat corruption and financial crimes.

High-profile speakers confirmed for the event include former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda; Director General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), Edward Harris; former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Bolaji Owasonoye; and the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed M. Malick.

President of ILA Nigeria, Damilola Olawuyi, emphasised the urgency of addressing financial crimes, noting that tax evasion, illicit financial flows, and corruption pose significant threats to sustainable development.

According to him, the failure to curb such practices undermines governments’ ability to provide critical infrastructure, healthcare, and research support, while also raising broader human rights concerns.

He added that the conference would equip participants with up-to-date knowledge, global best practices, and practical tools for anticipating and mitigating economic and financial crime risks, while promoting corporate responsibility and sound governance.

The event will also feature a President’s Dinner and Awards Night, including a keynote gala conversation focused on international mechanisms shaping policy, corporate strategies, and investment decisions in the fight against financial crimes.
