Osun 2026: INEC Faces Backlash Over Alleged Bias, Staff Redeployments

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, following accusations of partisan bias, controversial staff postings, and irregular voter transfers.

This is because a civic group, the Coalition for Concerned Nigeria Citizens (CCNC), has, in a petition to the INEC Chairman, Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, warned that the credibility of the election could be compromised if corrective measures are not taken urgently.

The CCNC alleged that recent redeployments of INEC officials in Osun were selective and partisan, claiming that individuals linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were being assigned to sensitive roles across key local government areas.

The group also raised alarm over alleged unauthorised voter transfers, describing them as violations of electoral law and potential attempts to manipulate outcomes.

The petition, signed by CCNC leaders, Abdulsalam Musa Akinkunmi and Owolabi O. Hassan, demanded the suspension of staff postings, a transparent audit of voter transfers, and a public assurance from INEC of its neutrality.

In a related development, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) criticised the redeployment of Osun’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, calling the move ill‑timed and capable of fuelling suspicion.

The group expressed concern over protests surrounding the appointment of incoming REC Toyin Babalola, urging INEC to consider appointing a REC from outside the region to restore confidence in the process.
