In a bold move to address Nigeria’s growing plastic waste crisis, The Alternative Bank will on Saturday, July 19, 2025, launch the maiden edition of its Walk4ZeroPlastic campaign at Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos.
The initiative, part of the World Environment Day Program under the Sterling Sustainability Working Group, aims to tackle plastic pollution through a community-driven outreach anchored on the theme, “In Markets, On Streets, For the Future.”
Combining a symbolic walk, plastic recovery, market sensitisation, and on-site sustainability-linked account activations, the campaign targets the collection of over 10 tons of plastic waste.
Tejuosho Market, one of Lagos’s busiest commercial hubs, has long struggled with improper plastic disposal, making it a fitting launch point for the project.
Hassan Yusuf, Managing Director and CEO of The Alternative Bank, highlighted the campaign’s purpose, stating:
“As a financial institution with deep roots in community and sustainability, we see this campaign as part of our responsibility to contribute meaningfully to collective efforts addressing the plastic crisis.”
He stressed that sustainable progress depends on collective action, not isolated efforts.
The campaign also reinforces Sterling HoldCo’s wider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda, aligning with both national policies and global frameworks such as the Global Plastics Treaty and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 12 and 13).
Bunmi Ajiboye, Chairperson of the Sterling Sustainability Working Group, added:
“Real change happens not in boardrooms, but on the ground, with consistent action and shared purpose. Walk4ZeroPlastic is one of many steps we must take together.”
Partners in the initiative include Wastebanc, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, LASEPA, LAWMA, Sterling ONE Foundation, Rite Foods, Africa Clean-up Initiative, and Foodbank.
