British Duo Jailed for Eight Years for Smuggling 51 kg of Cannabis into Nigeria

A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced two British nationals, Oyedipe Andrew Adejuwon and Mhizha Jordan Alexander Tatendra, to eight years’ imprisonment for attempting to smuggle 51.10 kilograms of cannabis into Nigeria.

The duo were arraigned before Justice Musa Kakaki by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and illegal importation of narcotics. Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to the NDLEA, Tatendra was arrested on May 14, 2025, at the E-Arrival Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, during the inward clearance of Emirates Airlines passengers from the United Arab Emirates, adding that officers discovered 51.10 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa concealed in his luggage.

The anti-narcotic agency maintained that further investigation revealed that Adejuwon, a Nigerian-born British citizen, had recruited Tatendra to execute the illicit importation.

In his contention before the judge, counsel for the prosecution, Abu Ibrahim, told the court that the two conspired with unidentified individuals overseas to bring the banned substance into the country.

Following their guilty pleas, the prosecution reviewed the case facts and urged the court to convict and sentence the defendants appropriately.

Justice Kakaki found the men guilty on all three counts. He sentenced them to two years on each count, to run concurrently.

The judge also ruled that the jail terms take effect from the date of their arrest, May 14, 2025.

The charge sheet marked FHC/L/421/2025 outlined that the offences contravened Sections 14(b), 21(2)(d), and 11(a) of the NDLEA Act.

Specifically, Adejuwon was accused of procuring Tatendra for the trafficking act, while Tatendra was charged with unlawfully importing the drugs into the country.
