Rivers State Sole Administrator Vows to Restore Stability, Warns Against Violence

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has reassured residents of his commitment to restoring governance and order, emphasizing that he is not in the state as a political competitor but as a stabilizing force.

In a state broadcast on Thursday, Ibas, who officially assumed duties at Government House, Port Harcourt, reaffirmed his dedication to protecting civil liberties and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

He, however, issued a stern warning against acts of sabotage and violence, particularly concerning crude oil infrastructure.

Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana highlighted his long-standing commitment to national service, stating that his appointment as Sole Administrator was driven by the urgent need to restore peace in Rivers State.

“For decades, I have dedicated my life to the service of our great nation — first as the 20th Indigenous Chief of Naval Staff and later as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana.

“I answered this call out of the need for peace in Nigeria, and most importantly, in Rivers State,” he declared.

Acknowledging the prolonged political crisis that has plagued the state, he described it as a major hindrance to governance and democracy, noting its adverse effects on families, businesses, and the overall economic well-being of the region.

“As a son of the Niger Delta, I am one of you. I feel the weight of this crisis on families, businesses, and the future of our people,” he assured, calling on all residents to embrace peace and unity.

Ibas commended President Bola Tinubu’s decisive intervention in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing the move as essential for restoring stability and reviving economic activities.

He also praised the National Assembly for supporting the declaration, which paved the way for his appointment.

“My mandate is clear: restore law and order, ensure stability, and create an enabling environment for economic growth.

“But this mission requires collective support from all stakeholders, regardless of political affiliation or ethnicity,” he stated.

The Sole Administrator warned against any resurgence of crude oil vandalism, urging residents to reject actions that could lead to environmental and economic devastation.

“The Niger Delta has moved beyond the destruction of oil facilities. We must resist the temptation to return to those ugly days,” he cautioned, referencing the detrimental impact of past sabotage incidents on local communities and the broader economy.

Ibas further reiterated that while his administration would uphold civil liberties, it would not tolerate lawlessness or any attempt to destabilize the state.

“We will not act arbitrarily, but we will not hesitate to deal decisively with anyone who threatens the peace and stability of Rivers State,” he asserted.

To reinforce his commitment to restoring order, Ibas revealed that he had already convened a State Security Council meeting to outline strategic measures aimed at de-escalating tensions and preventing further conflicts.

“We have identified key areas of concern and are working closely with security agencies to ensure that peace prevails across the state,” he noted.

Expressing optimism about Rivers State’s future, he pledged to work in close collaboration with the national leadership under President Tinubu’s guidance.

“I am optimistic that Rivers State will emerge stronger and greater. We must all come together to heal our land and move forward in unity,” Ibas concluded.
