World’s Oldest Person, Tomiko Itooka, Dies at 116


Tomiko Itooka, the world’s oldest person, passed away at 116 in Ashiya, Japan, on December 29, city officials announced Saturday. 

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka witnessed over a century of historical milestones, including the launch of the Ford Model T. 

A mother of four and grandmother of five, Itooka resided in a nursing home since 2019. 

She became the world’s oldest person following the death of Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera in August 2024. 

Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima praised her for inspiring others, saying, “Ms. Itooka gave us courage and hope through her long life.”
