Joy filled the air at Idotun Community Junior High School on Thursday as Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, in collaboration with Dangote Fertilisers Limited, awarded scholarships to 473 students from 10 secondary schools and 7 tertiary institutions.

The company also donated 804 tables and chairs to secondary schools across its host communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The occasion marked the 5th Edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme, which aims to support education and empower young learners in the local community.

Students, parents, teachers, and community leaders celebrated the event as beneficiaries received scholarship certificates and educational materials, including textbooks and notebooks.

Speaking at the event, Devakumar Edwin, Group Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, described the initiative as a shared vision between the company and the community, aimed at fostering education, innovation, and opportunity.

“Education is the passport to the future. At Dangote, we believe that education is not just a privilege but a right that every child deserves,” Edwin said.

“This belief has fueled our dedication to supporting students and schools in our host communities since 2019, when we launched the Scholarship Award Programme,” he added.

Edwin highlighted the program's significant progress, which began with 56 beneficiaries in 2019 and has grown to 450 students in 2024.

The increase reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to empowering communities and nurturing future leaders.

The donation of 804 tables and chairs, he noted, is part of Dangote’s broader goal of creating a conducive learning environment.

"This gesture underscores our dedication to ensuring that every child has access to quality education and a supportive environment where they can thrive," he posited.

Edwin encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace hard work and perseverance as they pursue their academic dreams.

According to Edwin, "Your dreams and aspirations inspire us to continue making a difference. Nurture this opportunity with dedication, and it will yield remarkable results in your future".

Olayinka Akande, Managing Director of Dangote Industries Free Zone Development Company (DIFZDC), echoed this sentiment.

He urged the students to aim for excellence, a core value of Dangote Industries, and envision themselves as future leaders.

"With dedication and diligence, you could become governors, ministers, captains of industry, or even the next 'Edwin,'" he said, drawing smiles from the audience.

Ogunleye Mojisola, Head of Social Performance at Dangote Petroleum & Petrochemicals, emphasized that education is one of the four pillars of the company's Community Development Plan.

She credited the initiative’s success to the unwavering support of Dangote management, which has ensured that resources are consistently provided.

“The annual increase in beneficiaries proves that the programme is achieving its goals—motivating students to excel academically and providing financial relief to families,” Mojisola said.

Community leaders praised Dangote Industries for its transformative efforts.

Chief Adewale Salami, the Aro of Lekki Kingdom, represented the Oni of Lekki at the event.

He commended the company for shaping the community’s future through education and pledged the kingdom’s continued support.

Alhaji Wasiu Ayeola, Chairman of the Lekki Coastal Area Development Association, lauded Dangote’s founder, Aliko Dangote, for turning the area into a thriving investment hub.

“What was once a hunting ground of rabbits and lizards is now a multibillion-dollar enterprise benefiting Lagos, Nigeria, and the world,” he said.

He emphasized the critical role of education in community development.

Several beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation for the scholarship program.

Atibere Peter from Lagos State University thanked Dangote Industries for alleviating his family’s financial burden.

Dauda Omolara from Community Senior High School, Magbon Segun, added that the support would motivate her to strive harder in her academics.

Ganiu Ayomide from Community Senior High School, Akodo, summed up the sentiments of many, stating, “This scholarship is a blessing. It will enable me to focus on my studies and achieve my goals.”
