Midnight Fire Destroys Properties Worth Millions at Moniya Farmers’ Market

A devastating midnight fire razed properties worth millions of naira at the popular “Oja Agbe” farmers’ market in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. The inferno, which broke out around midnight on December 2, affected several shops, containers, and kiosks, causing significant losses for traders in the bustling market.

The timely intervention of the Oyo State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas, averting a larger disaster. According to a statement issued by the manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyemi Akinyinka, the agency received a distress call at 12:27 a.m., reporting the incident.

“Upon receiving the distress call, a team led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Oyedeji was immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival, they found rows of shops and container kiosks engulfed in flames. The team quickly swung into action, curtailing the fire and preventing it from spreading to surrounding properties,” Akinyinka said.

While no lives were lost, the statement confirmed that properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the blaze. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical appliance left plugged in and unattended, a situation exacerbated by the dry and windy harmattan season.

Akinyinka emphasized the importance of fire safety, particularly during harmattan. He urged residents to handle electrical appliances and other fire-related activities with caution to prevent similar incidents.

“We appeal to all residents of Oyo State to exercise utmost care in handling fire, especially during this harmattan season. Fire safety should be a priority for everyone,” he said.

The incident has left many traders counting their losses as they begin to recover from the unfortunate event. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
