Dangote-Led Flood Committee Delivers N1BN Relief Materials to Borno Government

L-R: Secretary to the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Hajara Modu; Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur; NEMA Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Abdullahi Adamu Usur; and NEMA Coordinator for the Northeast Zonal Office, Mr. Sirajo Garba, during the handover ceremony of relief items by the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR) on Wednesday in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Aliko Dangote-led Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR) has delivered relief materials valued at N1 billion to the Borno State Government.

The items, intended for distribution to residents affected by the 2024 floods, were handed over during a ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

The Secretary of the Committee, Mrs Hajara Modu, who represented co-chairmen, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr Olisa Agbakoba, reiterated the committee's commitment to supporting flood-affected communities.

She noted that the intervention fulfilled a pledge made during the height of the 2024 flood crisis.

In September 2024, Maiduguri and surrounding areas in Borno State experienced devastating floods that submerged about 70% of the capital.

The disaster displaced thousands of residents, destroyed homes, and disrupted critical infrastructure, exacerbating the region's ongoing humanitarian challenges.

Mrs Modu highlighted that Alhaji Aliko Dangote had announced a donation of N2 billion to support relief efforts.

Of this amount, N1 billion was allocated by the PCFRR for emergency relief materials, while the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) contributed an additional N1 billion for other interventions.

She praised Alhaji Dangote for his commitment to philanthropy, noting that the committee, established in 2012 during former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, has continued its work with Dangote’s support.

The relief materials include both food and non-food items, such as beans, salt, sugar, tomato paste, vegetable oil, foam mattresses, mosquito nets, sanitary pads, bathing soap, and detergents.

Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, expressed deep gratitude for the intervention.

He assured that the state government had set up a committee to ensure the transparent and effective distribution of the items to those in need.

“Alhaji Aliko Dangote has consistently provided support in various forms, addressing critical needs in Borno.

“His contributions have significantly mitigated the impact of disasters and touched countless lives in the state,” said Governor Zulum.

Mrs Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), also commended the Dangote-led committee for its leadership in addressing humanitarian crises.

Represented by the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Abdullahi Adamu Usur, she emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting flood victims under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

NEMA’s Northeast Zonal Coordinator, Mr Sirajo Garba, assured that the agency, alongside other stakeholders, has established transparent modalities for distributing the relief items.

Borno State Commissioner for Women and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, described the intervention as significant, praising the Dangote-led committee for its unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes.

Aliko Dangote's efforts in spearheading disaster relief initiatives have been widely acknowledged as pivotal in addressing critical challenges.

His continued support, both through the PCFRR and the ADF, underscores his dedication to alleviating human suffering across Nigeria.

The relief materials are expected to provide much-needed support to flood-affected communities, contributing to ongoing recovery efforts in Borno State.
