Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed again, plunging large parts of the country into darkness on Thursday, November 7.
This marks the fifth collapse in less than a month, raising significant concerns over the country’s fragile power infrastructure and prompting frustration from citizens and businesses alike.
The incident was confirmed in a notice issued by Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), one of the largest power distributors in Nigeria.
In its statement, IKEDC informed its customers of the disruption:
“Dear esteemed customers, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07 November 2024, at 11.29hrs, affecting supply within our network.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our official stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
The grid has suffered repeated failures recently, with previous collapses reported on Tuesday, November 5, and on three separate occasions in October — on the 19th, 15th, and 14th.
These repeated outages have led to substantial criticism of the power management system in Nigeria, which has long struggled with reliability issues.
Following the October 14 collapse, a spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mrs Ndidi Mbah, explained that the outage was a partial one, as some areas, including the Port Harcourt axis, retained power.
However, on October 15, just hours after partial restoration, another collapse occurred.
