A fire outbreak at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has caused significant damage, destroying property valued at millions of naira.
The fire, which erupted in the early hours of Saturday, November 23, gutted the hospital's Emergency and Accident Unit.
Sources said the blaze started around 5 a.m. in a paediatric consultant's office, allegedly due to an electrical spark.
The flames quickly spread, damaging vital equipment, books, engines, electronic gadgets, as well as the ceilings and roofs of the affected section.
In response to the incident, 16 patients were urgently evacuated from the ward to ensure their safety.
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
Omotayo Ogunleye, the hospital's Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and emphasized that the situation was under control.
“Yes, it is true. It was a minor incident. But normal activities have resumed in the hospital,” he stated.
Efforts are reportedly underway to assess the extent of the damage and implement preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.
