Tinubu Scraps Niger Delta and Sports Ministries, Establishes New Ministry of Regional Development

President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.

This decision, announced by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, was made during the FEC meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The newly established Ministry of Regional Development will oversee various regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

This move aims to consolidate efforts and streamline the government's focus on regional development across Nigeria.

In a shift for sports administration, the functions previously managed by the Ministry of Sports Development will now fall under the National Sports Commission, which will take charge of all sports-related activities in the country.

Additionally, the FEC has approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, forming a single entity to drive tourism and cultural initiatives.

Onanuga’s announcement did not address the future of the ministers previously leading the dissolved ministries — Abubakar Momoh of the Niger Delta Ministry and John Enoh of the Sports Development Ministry — nor did it clarify how their duties would be reassigned.

The restructuring comes amid rising calls for a more streamlined government to reduce costs associated with numerous ministries and political offices.

At a cabinet retreat last November, President Tinubu introduced a Central Delivery Coordination Unit to monitor the performance of ministers and senior officials, emphasizing that performance reviews would be key in determining their tenure.

“If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, we’ll review it. If no performance, you leave us.

“No one is an island and the buck stops on my desk,” Tinubu stated.
