In a surprising decision, the Kenyan Senate voted on Thursday to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.
The Senate's vote came after two days of hearings, during which Gachagua faced 11 charges.
Ultimately, he was found guilty of five of them, leading to his impeachment.
The Senate only needed to convict Gachagua on one charge to secure his dismissal.
The proceedings took a dramatic turn when Gachagua was admitted to the hospital with severe chest pains on Thursday, preventing him from testifying in his defence.
This historic vote marks the first time a Deputy President has been removed from office through impeachment since Kenya's revised 2010 constitution introduced the process.
