•Probes Allegations of Bribery, Preferential Treatment
A Federal Government panel investigating bribery allegations concerning Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has confirmed that the social media star served his six-month jail term but received several privileges during his time in custody.
Speaking at the Ministry of Interior on Monday, Uju Agomoh, a member of the panel, presented the initial findings, stating that there was no evidence to suggest that Bobrisky left the custodial centre during his imprisonment, which lasted from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024. However, the panel noted that Bobrisky was transferred between various facilities, ending his term at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri-Apapa, Lagos, which the panel deemed inappropriate for a first-time offender under Sections 164A and 164B of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019.
The report highlighted the privileges Bobrisky enjoyed, including a furnished single cell, access to a humidifier, television, refrigerator, frequent family visits, and designated inmates assisting with errands. The panel called for clearer guidelines to prevent similar cases of preferential treatment in the future, and emphasized the need to address discriminatory practices based on socioeconomic status.
The investigation followed allegations by blogger Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, who claimed that Bobrisky paid ₦15 million to officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges. Further claims suggested Bobrisky paid additional sums for better accommodations in prison. Bobrisky has denied all allegations, while the EFCC and Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have launched their investigations, with the House of Representatives also probing the matter.
