Trial Of Medical Doctors Over Alleged Involuntary Manslaughter Begins May 15

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the trial of two medical doctors before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, will begin on May 15, 2024.

The judge decided after Doctors Michael Atiba and Ugbeye Michael pleaded not guilty to a count charge made against them by the Lagos State Government (LASG).

Atiba, a doctor at the Gbagada General Hospital, and Dr Michael, a Consultant with the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, were dragged before the judge over their alleged involvement in the involuntary manslaughter of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi.

While their arraignment lasted, the counsel for the LASG, A. O. Azeez hinted to Justice Ogala that the incident took place on October 21, 2023.

The prosecutor also informed the court that the incident took place at No. 20, Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju, Lagos State, adding that Atiba and Michael unlawfully caused the death of one Ugorobi by the wrongful application of medication before and after surgery.

According to Azeez, the alleged offence contravene Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

But the medical doctors pleaded not guilty to the charge slammed against them.

This prompted Justice Ogala to grant them bail in various terms.
