A Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), Charity Ayo Foundation, has empowered some disadvantaged residents of Ajomo Community in the Katu/Mile 12 area of Lagos State with liquid soap-making skills.
The programme is part of the foundation's efforts to close the gap in access to education and entrepreneurship by empowering communities across the country economically through skill acquisition.
The training conducted by team members of the NGO saw participants taught how to soak and mix different chemicals to produce the liquid soap.
The participants were also assessed on what they were taught, after which three winners, who were provided funding to start independently, emerged.
The winners were presented with decorated cheques to be given to an authorised chemicals dealer to collect chemicals worth the amount contained in the cheques for immediate production by each of them.
In her address at the event, the founder of the NGO, Mrs Charity Ayooluwa Olaifa, said the foundation decided to embark on empowerment training to cushion the effects of the current economic situation in the country for the less privileged members of the society.
Olaifa, who is also a lawyer, said, "The economy is bad generally, but it is worse for people with no livelihood.
"Charity Ayo Foundation has decided to reduce the poverty level and also boost the economy by training as many people as possible in the country in the production of liquid soap.
“Through this program, those that are gainfully employed can make production for domestic use, while those that are not can produce for sale.”
The community leaders present at the event expressed happiness and also stated their desire to collaborate with the NGO in the future to expand the training to more members of the community.
