The police have been accused of beating up the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, after being arrested in Imo State on Wednesday.

The Head of Media and Publicity, Benson Upah stated this in a statement, after confirming Ajaero's release.

Upah said: “Contact was made with Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero this evening around 1530 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he is receiving medical attention.

“Thoroughly brutalized, his (Ajeero’s) right eye at the time of contact was completely shut.

“Mr Ajaero’s phones, money, and other personal effects were taken from him and have not been returned to him.”

The police had earlier stated that Ajaero was taken into custody for his protection, but the NLC insisted that he was brutalized after his arrest.

But on his part, Ajaero, who did not say much, revealed that after his arrest, he was beaten up and blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination where more brutalization took place, sometimes with bottles.

It would be recalled that the NLC President was arrested in Owerri, the Imo State capital, and taken to an unknown destination.

The NLC President was picked up from the State Council Secretariat by heavily armed policemen.
