A call has been made for the arrest and prosecution of the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu Ojo, over the cohesion of traders to support the candidature of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The call was made by the Labour Party (LP) which also charged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Delta State.
It would be recalled that a video had gone viral where shops of traders who failed to attend the Women’s rally supporting Tinubu’s ambition were shut.
The affected Traders complained that they were being forced to pay the sum of N5,000 (Five Thousand Naira) as a fine.
However, a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Arabambi Abayomi Oluwafemi, insisted that the action is not consonant with the tenets of democracy.
The statement, captioned ‘LABOUR PARTY CALLS FOR ARREST OF IYALOJA GENERAL, CHIEF FOLASHADE TINUBU OJO AND DECLARATION OF STATE OF EMERGENCY BY PRESIDENT BUHARI IN DELTA STATE’, argued that every Nigerian is entitled to associate with any political party of their choice.
While referencing the law, the party’s scribe said the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the freedom of association, wondering when it became an offence for Nigerians to make personal political decisions.
According to him, Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 provides as follows: “Every person shall be entitled to assembly freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any association for the protection of his interests.”
The urgent call, according to Oluwafemi, became imperative going by the recurring attacks on Members of LP and their offices in Lagos.
The party’s image maker recalled the attack on the LP offices in Ajegunle and other areas in Lagos, which according to him is not limited to the assault on members of the party in the Oshodi area of Lagos.
Oluwafemi further insisted that the State Police Command has refused to act on its clarion calls to create an enabling environment for all politicians in Lagos, irrespective of their party affiliation.
In a similar vein, the party drew the attention of President Buhari to the alleged act of brigandage in Delta State and wants an emergency rule declared in the state before it becomes too late, with an addition that a stitch in time saves nine.
Oluwafemi expressed the worries of the party over members being allegedly subjected to daily attacks by the agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.
Comrade Oluwafemi argued that if the trend goes unchecked, it is capable of causing the breakdown of law and order and a full recipe for anarchy capable of truncating the 2023 general election.
He, however, appealed to its members to continue peacefully and remain law-abiding, adding that the party will do all legally possible to protect their rights.
Oluwafemi reminded the vice presidential candidate of the PDP to focus his attention on the real enemies within his party and stop pursuing perceived enemies.
