Alleged defilement: UNILAG Professor Seeks Daughters' Custody

Cece Yara Foundation was on Wednesday asked to produce in court the two daughters of Adebisi Arewa, an Associate Professor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The directive was issued by an Ikeja Special Offences Court, presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo who specifically ordered that the children be brought before it on August 25, 2022, to enable her to have an interface with the children to find out about their wellbeing.

In particular, the judge explained that the order became imperative to enable her to speak with the daughters in chambers and also allow the children to speak for themselves.

While Justice Taiwo’s ruling lasted, Professor Arewa, who appeared for himself, hinted to the judge that his children were not properly catered for and that they are being provided with second-hand clothes in the custody of Cece Yara Foundation when they are the children of a Professor of Law.

In adding that the last time, he saw his children was in May 2022, the Associate Professor alleged that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is using his influence with the school where his children are attending in persecuting his person.

Professor Arewa also notified the judge that the mother of the children, a banker, is incapable of caring for them due to her work and that he remains the best person to care for the children, who are 7 and 10 years respectively.

The UNILAG law professor further revealed that the children are not disturbed and that they should be handed over to him, adding that they are doing fine in their school.

Professor Arewa had sued, on behalf of himself and his two children, against the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.

Other respondents dragged into the legal battle are the Director of Public Prosecution, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Executive Secretary, Domestic and Sexual Violence Team in the Ministry of Justice, Chief Mrs O. A Olayinka, Chief Magistrate of Lagos State, O. T Odumole, Principal Social Welfare Officer, Yaba, Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos state.

In the legal confrontation, the Professor of Law wants an order seeking immediate release of the applicants to their parents.

He also prayed the court for an order quashing the forensic interview so long as it disparages the interest of the minors, purportedly conducted by the Cece Yara Foundation without the consent and participation of the parents.

Professor Arewa also wants an order to release the children to enable them to go to school.

Cece Yara Foundation had taken possession of the children on the allegation that Professor Arewa is allegedly having carnal knowledge of his two daughters and for his refusal to release the victims for forensic examination.
