650gram ingested cocaine: Court throws out suspect's bail application

The bail application filed by a Qatar-based Nigerian, Agudozie Peter Ihie, before a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos was on Monday refused by the court presided over by Justice Tijjani Ringim.

It would be recalled that Agudozie Peter Ihie was charged before the court for smuggling into Nigeria, 650 grams of Cocaine, by ingestion.

Agudozie Peter Ihie was specifically arraigned before Justice Ringim’s by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a two-count charge of unlawful importation of the named drug on January 25, 2022.

According to the prosecutor, Juliana Imaobong-Iroabuchi, the offence contravened section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, and punishable under the same Act.

But the defendant had pleaded not guilty, and this prompted his lawyer, Chief Benson Ndakara and the prosecutor to argue on his bail application.

In his ruling on the bail application, Justice Ringim dismissed all the submissions made by the defendant’s lawyer, Ndakara.

The judge however agreed with the submissions of the prosecutor to the extent that the defendant is a flight risk and that he will not turn up to stand trial on charges made against him.

The case has been adjourned till May 25, 2022, for trial, just as he ordered an accelerated hearing of the criminal charge.
