Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general elections, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has attributed Nigeria's rising poverty levels to what he described as failed leadership and ineffective governance, insisting that the country's economic challenges can be reversed through purposeful leadership and strategic planning.
Adebayo made the remarks in a message posted on his official X handle, where he criticised the economic direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration and questioned the impact of its reforms on the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
According to the SDP leader, despite nearly three years of economic reforms under the current administration, millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs, declining purchasing power, unemployment, and widespread hardship.
“Poverty is not Nigeria's destiny. It is the result of failed leadership, and it can be defeated with the right government, the right priorities, and the right plan,” Adebayo stated.
He argued that Nigeria's economic difficulties are not rooted in a shortage of resources or potential, but in the inability of those in government to translate the country's wealth into meaningful opportunities for citizens.
Adebayo maintained that the true measure of economic progress should not be limited to macroeconomic indicators or statistical growth figures, but should reflect improvements in Nigerians' daily lives.
According to him, economic success should be assessed by whether citizens can afford necessities, secure decent employment, and live in safe and stable communities.
“The problem in Nigeria is not a lack of resources. It is a lack of opportunities and a failure by those in power to ensure that growth reaches the people,” he said.
The former presidential candidate also presented the SDP as a viable alternative for future elections, promising policies focused on poverty reduction, job creation, improved security, and the equitable distribution of national resources.
He called on Nigerians to become actively involved in the democratic process and support efforts aimed at national renewal and economic transformation.
“Change begins now. Join the SDP. Say farewell to poverty,” Adebayo added.
