Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of weaponising poverty to suppress demands for accountability from Nigerians.
Speaking in an interview on the state of the nation, Adebayo said the economic hardship facing millions is not accidental but a direct result of policy failures under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
He argued that citizens have become so focused on survival that they’ve lost sight of their constitutional rights.
“The poverty that Nigerians are facing is artificial, government-inflicted and self-tolerated by the people,” Adebayo stated.
He faulted the Tinubu administration for failing to empower citizens through education, jobs, and welfare, claiming instead that current conditions deepen dependence on political handouts.
According to him, a hungry population struggles to challenge authority or demand its constitutional guarantees.
“My opponent is not Tinubu. My opponent is the ignorance of the people. Once they understand what the government is supposed to do and what their rights are as citizens, they will know why they are suffering,” Adebayo added.
Adebayo cited Chapter Two of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines the government’s obligations to citizens, arguing that proper resource management would make current levels of poverty and unemployment impossible.
He pointed to the rise in out-of-school children as proof of abandoned responsibilities, noting that many children now hawk goods, beg, or roam streets nationwide.
“There is no part of Nigeria where you will not find children selling on the streets or begging. Some receive no schooling at all, while others receive schooling without education,” he said.
The SDP candidate alleged that the APC has allowed education to collapse, producing graduates unable to drive national development. He warned that a poorly educated population is easier to manipulate and less likely to hold leaders accountable.
Adebayo said worsening insecurity, unemployment, and hardship have distracted Nigerians from core issues, creating a society that accepts short-term relief over long-term reform. He believes this benefits politicians who exploit poverty to secure loyalty and avoid scrutiny.
The solution, he insisted, lies in political enlightenment and civic education.
“Politicians are looking for voters, but citizens should first understand that they are citizens and what that means. Once they understand their rights, they will stop settling for crumbs and start demanding good governance,” Adebayo said.
He stressed that real change will come when Nigerians reject dependency and hold leaders accountable for managing national resources. For Adebayo, the task isn’t just defeating Tinubu at the polls, but awakening citizens to their rights and responsibilities.
“Once Nigerians become politically conscious and refuse to be controlled by poverty and patronage, the country's democratic and economic fortunes will begin to change,” he concluded.
