Youth Party Holds Landmark National Convention in Abuja, Elects New Leaders

The Youth Party staged a historic National Convention on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Wetland Hotel, Abuja, marking a defining moment for Nigeria’s fast-rising youth-driven political movement.

Delegates from across the federation gathered in a vibrant atmosphere to elect new national executives, ratify grassroots congresses, and chart the party’s next phase of growth.

The convention ratified ward, local government, and state congresses across 26 states, strengthening the party’s grassroots presence.

Decisions of the National Executive Committee (NEC) since the last convention were also endorsed, alongside the swearing-in of newly elected officials.

Mr Abdulrahman Abubakar of Niger State emerged as National Chair, with Mr Sadiq Abu of Ogun State as Deputy Chair.

Other elected officers include Mr Sope Durodola (Oyo State) as National Financial Secretary, Mrs Helen Adoh (Kogi State) as National Secretary, and Mallam Mujaheed Ahmad (Bauchi State), Mr Yahaya Maibe (Borno State), and Mr Adeolu Dara (Kwara State) as National Executive Officers I, II, and III respectively.

In his acceptance speech, Abubakar pledged to uphold the party’s values of accountability, transparency, and reform, reaffirming its commitment to the principle of One Member, One Vote (OMOV).

He outlined five immediate priorities: conducting free and fair primaries, amending the party’s constitution and manifesto, reviewing BOT-set KPIs, enforcing discipline, and securing at least 10 legislative seats in the 2027 general elections.

Observers hailed the convention as a model of youth-led democracy. A delegate from Gombe State described the ratification exercise as “democracy in its truest form,” while the election of Mrs Helen Adoh as National Secretary drew a standing ovation from women delegates.

Solomon Oyekunle, the party’s Director of Communications, captured the spirit of the day: “Today was not a convention, it was a covenant. Every officer sworn in today carries the weight of millions of Nigerians who were told politics is not for them. We exist to prove otherwise.”

The convention closed in the evening, leaving behind a re-energised, restructured, and resolute Youth Party, determined to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
