TEHRAN — Iran has officially entered a period of high-stakes transition following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US–Israeli airstrike on Saturday.
In a swift move to stabilise the state, the government has appointed senior cleric Ayatollah Arafi to serve as interim Supreme Leader.
The announcement signals the beginning of a formal succession process managed by the Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for selecting the nation’s highest authority.
Under Iranian law, the Supreme Leader’s duties do not fall to a single individual during an emergency vacancy.
Instead, Arafi will lead a three-member council tasked with navigating the country through this period of uncertainty.
The council consists of: Ayatollah Arafi, Interim Leader and senior Guardian Council member; Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran: Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, Chief Justice.
At 67, Arafi is a heavyweight within Iran’s religious and political hierarchy. A product of the prestigious Qom seminaries, he holds the rank of mujtahid, granting him the authority to issue independent Islamic legal rulings.
His deep ties to the Guardian Council and the Expediency Discernment Council suggest a continuity approach as the regime looks to maintain internal order.
