ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a significant move to combat period poverty and bolster female education, the PS Foundation successfully hosted its “Pad Up a Girl Child” initiative at Junior Secondary School (JSS) Gwarinpa 1 on June 3, 2025.
The outreach, made possible through the sponsorship of Eigbefoh Paul Smith, targeted the intersection of health education and academic continuity.
For many adolescent girls in Nigeria, the lack of access to sanitary products remains a leading cause of school absenteeism, a barrier the PS Foundation is determined to dismantle.
Bridging the Gap in Menstrual Health
The event was more than a donation drive; it served as a masterclass in personal dignity.
Volunteers and health educators engaged students in open, interactive sessions designed to break the long-standing cultural stigmas surrounding menstruation.
Hundreds of sanitary pads were distributed to students, ensuring they can manage their cycles with comfort and remain in the classroom where they belong.
“Many young girls miss school simply because they lack access to basic health necessities and proper education,” said Eigbefoh Paul Smith during the event.
“Through this initiative, we are bridging that gap. Our goal is to ensure every girl is informed, supported, and empowered to reach her full potential,” he added.
A Timely Intervention
School administrators at JSS Gwarinpa 1 lauded the program as a transformative intervention.
Teachers noted that providing these materials and fostering an environment of open dialogue allows girls to seek guidance without shame, directly impacting their self-esteem and academic performance.
Looking Toward the Future
The success in Gwarinpa marks just one chapter in the PS Foundation’s broader mission. The organisation has reaffirmed its commitment to scaling the Pad Up a Girl Child campaign to several other schools across the Federal Capital Territory and wider Nigeria.
By prioritising menstrual hygiene, the foundation continues to champion the rights of the girl child, ensuring that biology never becomes an obstacle to education.
