LAGOS — In a historic shift for Africa’s largest economy, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has moved to eliminate Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel.
The facility is set to supply between 60 and 65 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily to the domestic market, surpassing the nation’s average consumption.
With Nigeria’s daily petrol needs estimated at 50 to 60 million litres, the refinery is now positioned to export a surplus of approximately 20 million litres to international markets.
President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, confirmed that a structured offtake agreement has been finalised with major petroleum marketers to ensure seamless nationwide distribution.
“We have agreed on an offtake framework to supply up to 65 million litres daily for the domestic market. Any surplus, estimated at between 15 and 20 million litres, will be exported,” Dangote stated.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has endorsed a revised distribution framework.
Under this model, the refinery will channel supply through a Who's Who of major marketers to prevent bottlenecks and curb the speculative hoarding that has historically led to fuel queues.
The key distribution partners Include: NNPC Retail, TotalEnergies & Mobil (11 plc), MRS, Conoil, and Ardova Plc, Rainoil, Bovas, and AA Rano.
The refinery is not just meeting targets; it is exceeding them. During a recent high-level inspection, NNPC Limited Group CEO, Engr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari, revealed that the plant’s operational performance has surpassed its nameplate capacity.
“This plant was designed for 650,000 barrels per day. What we saw live today was 661,000 barrels.
“These are live parameters, not reports or photographs. It is a transformative asset for our energy security,” Ojulari noted.
