In a landmark shift for Nigeria’s criminal justice landscape, the newly appointed Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Oyedepo Iseoluwa Rotimi, SAN, has formally committed to a tenure defined by professionalism, independence, and an unwavering adherence to the rule of law.
In an official statement released late Tuesday, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria expressed humility regarding his appointment, characterising the role not as a personal milestone, but as a solemn national responsibility.
Rotimi’s appointment comes at a pivotal juncture as the federal government seeks to bolster public confidence in the nation's legal institutions.
Extending his profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the confidence reposed in him, Rotimi also lauded the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN.
He acknowledged that the trust placed in his leadership carries significant weight, particularly as the country navigates complex security and legal challenges.
"I receive this trust with humility and a full appreciation of the responsibility it entails," Rotimi stated.
He further credited his professional journey to the steadfast support of mentors, colleagues across the Bar and Bench, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organisations.
The new DPPF was clear about its roadmap for reform. Recognising that the appointment arrives at a critical moment for Nigeria’s criminal justice system, he emphasised that the era of business as usual is over.
He outlined a vision for a future-ready prosecutorial framework anchored on four key pillars namely: Shielding legal decisions from external pressures,
enhancing the technical capacity of the department, reducing delays in the administration of justice, and ensuring that every action aligns with the supreme law of the land.
Addressing concerns regarding the impartiality of the justice system, Rotimi assured the Nigerian public that his office would operate with clinical objectivity.
He vowed that prosecutorial discretion would remain insulated from extraneous considerations or political influence.
"Prosecutorial decisions under my leadership will be guided solely by law, evidence, and the public interest," he affirmed, stressing that fairness and diligence would be the hallmarks of his administration.
