A Nigerian passenger has issued an ultimatum to Qatar Airways, demanding the return of his missing luggage or compensation of ₦11,812,000 (approximately $7,500 USD) within 14 days, failing which he will initiate legal proceedings.
The demand comes via a formal letter from Brown & Cooper Solicitors, dated July 25, 2026, on behalf of Mr Peter Omopariola Fowoyo.
The legal action emanated from an incident on June 27, 2026, when Mr Fowoyo travelled from Doha, Qatar, to Lagos aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1407.
According to the legal representatives, Mr Fowoyo checked in three bags at the point of departure, tagged with numbers 0157264140, 0157264141, and 0157264142.
However, upon arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, he was only able to retrieve two of them.
The letter further revealed that Mr Fowoyo waited for several hours at the baggage claim area before realising that only a similar-looking bag remained on the carousel.
“He promptly reported the discrepancy to the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and completed a baggage irregularity report, receiving assurances that a trace would be initiated. Despite this, the bag has not been recovered to date,” the letter stated.
The solicitors described the missing item as a medium-sized black briefcase, which contained substantial valuables, including: $3,000 in cash, two gold wristwatches, essential medication, 15 pairs of new trousers, new footwear (Nike and Adidas canvas shoes, plus a pair of black shoes), 10 pairs of new socks, two packs of singlets, and a vegetable cutte, and food items including biscuits and cashew nuts
Crucially, the firm noted that the receipts for all listed items were also inside the missing luggage, rendering it impossible for their client to provide documentary proof of purchase at this time.
In the demand letter, Brown & Cooper Solicitors gave Qatar Airways a 14-day window from receipt of the notice to either recover and return the luggage in full or pay the ₦11.812 million in damages.
The firm warned that failure to comply would result in their client instituting legal proceedings without further notice.
As of this publication, Qatar Airways has not issued a public response regarding the allegations or the compensation demand.
