The Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Aliko Dangote, has escalated his legal battle against the former Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.
On Friday, Dangote’s legal team filed a formal corruption petition at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), urging a swift investigation into allegations of abuse of office and "unjustifiable" wealth.
This move follows the strategic withdrawal of a similar petition from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) earlier this week.
The petition, signed by Lead Counsel, Dr O.J. Onoja (SAN), called on the EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, to probe Ahmed’s financial dealings.
The core of the allegation rests on what the petition termed the extravagant international education of Ahmed’s four children — Faisal, Farouk Jr., Ashraf, and Farhana, at elite Swiss institutions.
Dangote alleged that Ahmed, a career public servant, spent approximately $5 million on secondary school tuition, travel, and upkeep at prestigious schools including Institut Le Rosey and Aiglon College.
The petition further claimed an additional $2 million was expended on tertiary education, including a $210,000 expenditure for a Harvard MBA program in 2025.
“Nigerians deserve to know the source of these funds, especially when many parents in Mr Ahmed’s home state of Sokoto struggle to pay as little as ₦10,000 in school fees,” the petition stated.
The issued erupted in late December 2025, shortly before Farouk Ahmed resigned from his position at the NMDPRA.
Dangote argued that such expenditures are inconsistent with the legitimate earnings of a public official and raise questions about the integrity of regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
Dr Onoja, SAN, emphasised that the EFCC is strategically positioned to establish a prima facie case. The petition cited legal precedents such as Lawan v. F.R.N (2024) to argue that the courts must punish public officers who use their positions for personal enrichment.
“The commission’s firm resolve in handling this matter with dispatch is not only imperative but will also serve as a deterrent to other public officers with corrupt tendencies,” the legal team added.
