CDHR Demands Immediate Release of Taiwo Soweto Following Police Crackdown in Lagos

LAGOS – The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has issued a blistering condemnation of the Lagos State security forces following a violent crackdown on peaceful protesters at the State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

The demonstration, led by Hassan Taiwo Soweto, convener of the #EndBadGovernance movement and leader of the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM), was organised to protest the recent wave of forced evictions and demolitions targeting working-class communities across Lagos.

What began as a peaceful assembly of displaced residents seeking government intervention quickly spiralled into chaos.

In a statement jointly signed by its National President, Comrade Debo Adeniran, and Publicity Secretary, Deacon Jeremiah Onyibe, the CDHR stated that, "The use of live bullets against peaceful protesters is unlawful, reckless, and unacceptable.

"It reflects a growing pattern of repression and criminalisation of peaceful protest by state authorities."

The CDHR called for what it termed the unconditional freedom of Hassan Taiwo Soweto and all other detained protesters, a thorough investigation into the use of maximum force and the prosecution of officers who fired on civilians, an immediate end to forced evictions without prior consultation, resettlement plans, or fair compensation, and a reminder to the state that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, not a criminal offence.

As of Wednesday evening, the whereabouts of the arrested activists remain a point of concern for civil society groups, who warn that the state’s resort to force only deepens the rift between the government and the vulnerable populations it is sworn to protect.
