A dramatic scene unfolded on Tuesday at the Lagos State High Court premises when a lawyer, Mr Obinna Okereke, Principal Partner of High Refuge Attorneys, allegedly assaulted a judicial officer, Mrs Temilola Ossai, after striking her with his vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred near the court entrance when Okereke, who was driving a champagne gold-coloured Toyota Sienna, accidentally hit Mrs Ossai, a staff member of the Lagos State Judiciary, as she walked by the roadside.
According to sources, Mrs Ossai demanded an apology for the minor collision, but instead of apologising, the lawyer allegedly became aggressive, hurled insults at her, and then punched her several times in the face.
The assault allegedly caused heavy bleeding from her nose and mouth, prompting passersby and court users to intervene before security personnel attached to the judiciary arrived and arrested the lawyer.
“The lady only asked him to say sorry after he hit her with the car, but he suddenly flared up and started punching her,” an eyewitness said.
The altercation disrupted activities within the court premises. It was gathered that the Chief Registrar of the Lagos State Judiciary has ordered a formal complaint to be filed at the Area F Police Command for investigation and possible prosecution.
As of press time, Mrs Ossai was said to have received first aid, while efforts to contact Mr Okereke were unsuccessful.
The judiciary is yet to release an official statement on the incident.
